Introduction
A national issue in recent news that is of relevance to the families is divorce and separation. The cost of being a child of divorce according to the News.com.au (2013) leaves the children who encounter family break-ups far more likely to be violent, unhappy and feel unfulfilled throughout their lives, according to an NHS study. Children’s’ sense of self-worth and schoolwork often both suffer, and they can become quiet and withdrawn, moody and aggressive.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of children affected by divorce has increased from 43,867 in 2011 to 48,288 in 2012. Education is one area where effects of divorce on children are very noticeable (Teachnology, 2012). This issue is relevant for teachers to understand, as teachers can play an important role in helping students going through their parents’ divorce and separation. Children may turn to teachers and others in their schools because they are already important people in their lives. They may see them as a stable and concerned presence during the stress of big changes in their lives (Pedro-Carroll, 2010). Teachers can encourage correction in their students’ attitudes. Childcare centers, preschools and schools all are a part of the child's network, and they can help support healthy child development. There should always be open communication between the school and home; as issues at home can see a change in a child's behaviour. With this in mind it becomes very important to keep parents fully involved in the child's education.
